Hello Friends and thanks for following my blog. Please comment on this page versus facebook. This blog is not for entertainment. It is a more intimate blog that is part of a course that I am currently taking with professor Rockquemore @ UIC, a course titled "Leadership For Change". In this course we are learning about different types of leaders, more importantly finding out who we are and finding the leader in us! I appreciate you following along and will try to keep you as informed as possible. Our Assignment are usually based on readings from 4 books 1.Bell Hooks, All About Love 2.Susan Komives Exploring Leadership: For College Students Who Want To Make a Difference 3. Parker Palmer, Let Your Life Speak 4. Barbara Sher. Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want. and additional reading from our Blackboard site.

*Exercise 1:
Read Barbara Sher's chapter Goal search
".Write your dream, touchstone, role model and target post them on blog along with insights."

5 lives
*****
Present, I wish it was a fuschia pink to represent my boldness.
Green is from last semester, it represent the "Go" Ahead attitude I had last semester even though I was weary.

Dream : positively impact the Nigerian government
Touchstone: Be in a position where I can represent "the people"
Role model: I don't know anyone currently doing this, but intend to research.
Target: bring hope to Nigeria and it's people

This has not changed, I want to impact Nigeria because I feel shame when I think of the countries failure and the suffering that my people face. Last year I wasn't yet ready to admit that I want to focus on Nigeria, it made me feel selfish, and like I had to help other countries too(which I will). However right now, my priority is based on my experience after visiting the country and reviewing the needs that the world bank have posted on their sight. (I can be close to my family, and get paid in dollars, and travel)
My Role Model is now Wangari Mathaai Authour of Unbowed and a noble prize winner( I read her book while in Morocco).

Lawyer
Dream: Represent those whom can not necessarily afford Lawyers
Touch stone: Be a voice for the underprivileged
Role Model: Obama "Yes we can"
Target: I recognize that life may never be perfect and hope that I can change any little bit of it....
Lawyer
Same as above.
Doctor
Dream : Open a non for profit hospital in Nigeria
Touchstone: Help the ill by providing health care to those who can not necessarily afford it.
role model: My father; he urges me that it is possible and it is needed. From my perspective however, there are other things that must be done in Nigeria before, bettering health care; something higher up in the hierarchic of needs.
target: open a county clinic; non for profit

*Activist
This exercise acknowledged my fear of commitment, I am often afraid to state my plans after my bachelors because they change with knowledge. The more I learn about opportunities that are out there to server the world and Nigeria particularly, the more options I see. Since I have been working towards obtaining my bachelors I have switched my focus of study from Pre-med biology, to Nursing and now economics Pre-law. I often find it hard however to state my current pre-law staus because I am afraid that people will hold me to it. Barbra sher acknowledges this "fear of commitment" in this chapter. She stated that societies misconception is that when we decide on what we want to do we have to stick with it, she negates the idea. Sher, stating that as a misconceptions made me feel much more comfortable choosing and listing the majors above; otherwise this assignment may taken me a life time to complete. Thanks Barbra Sher!(LOL). Barbra Sher goes further in this idea by acknowledging that some dreams are impossible and are mere fantasies; I understand this. However, I believe that most dreams are possible;especially my dreams. As selfish or concieted as this may sound I mean it in a humble manner.
This still remains the same (thats why it is in both colors and I elaborated on it in my introduction)

In order to accomplish my goals I have to begin educating myself on bills and laws in Nigeria.
The reason
why my focus is on working in Nigeria is because of the brain drain theory, this theory claims that the reason why many third world countries suffer, is because the professionals who leave the country for educational empowerment often do not return to put their knowldge in their economy/society. I believe this theory because I witness it; when talking to forigners and the question of giving back (human capitol)to their homeland comes up they often ask, "why would I go back to suffer?" My questions is, " Why would you go back to suffer?, Go back to CHANGE!"

*Exercise 2:
Take a personality test @ (http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgiwin/JTypes2.asp) after taking the test we were to read up on our personality type @ http://www.personalitypage.com/high-level.html

My personality type is"ENFJ" Extroverted Intuitive Feeling Judging. extroverted feeling with introverted intuition.
I am now and INFJ(I agree with some but not all, I noticed that I have changed more this semester than last semester. I am always thinking and having conversations in my head, I have become more internal than External, so I can understand why the Extrovert has now become an Introvert. I think it is mainly because I spend more time constantly analyzing myself for improvement and I have been spending alot more time alone.
ast year when I took this test, I was an ENFJ, and this year I am an INFJ. I can totally feel the change. These days I no longer like parties and big social events, I enjoy more intimate small group settings. Plus, I am begining to process information more internally that I used too. I spend more time alone because, I am beginning to realize I can't convince my friends to do what I want them to do(like studying). Plus, I like to have a strict schedule that I follow, I don not want to have to wait for anyone to do what I want to do. I also realize that I process information differently from many people that I find myself around. I don't think about race, gender or things of that nature. I think about all of humanity. I want everyone to be happy(which I am aware is impossible, but I will reach as many people as I can.
  • slightly expressed introvert
  • distinctively expressed intuitive personality
  • distinctively expressed feeling personality
  • moderately expressed judging personality

Some bullet points about ENFJ's

*GIVER
*Strong need for close and meaninful relationships.
*Primary mode of living :Deal with things based on how you feel about them ( externally)
*Seconadary mode of living: Deal with things based on intuition.
*Focused Individuals
*have an extraordinary talent for bringing the best out in people.
*main intrest in life is giving love, support, and a good time to other people.
* Motives are "usually" unselfish
*FIND IT DIFFICULT TO SPEND TIME ALONE... but needs time alone (finally getting that alone time in Right NOW)
*Reserved about exposing themselves (ha ha ha....this is why most people would say I don't care what people think.)
*Likely to interact with others on their own level (OMg... these people have been following me around.)
*Express values and Opinions clearlt and succinctly.
*Supportive and responsive to ohers
*May feel quite lonely even when surrounded by people. (YOU can read more on the past in my past blog)
This assignment made me more comfortable with myself and has also gave me a little more confidence about my character. THIS IS WHO I AM... A GIVER!

I am now an INFJ THE PROTECTOR I believe alot of my characteristics still remain the same, except that I process more information internally and I react based on intuition.
I belive a giver and a protector goes hand in hand. I am willing to give myself and services to others in order to protect them.

As an INFJ, your primary mode of living is focused internally, where you take things in primarily via intuition. Your secondary mode is external, where you deal with things according to how you feel about them, or how they fit with your personal value system. This is the internal change that I have been speaking of.

INFJs are gentle, caring, complex and highly intuitive individuals. Artistic and creative, they live in a world of hidden meanings and possibilities. Only one percent of the population has an INFJ Personality Type, making it the most rare of all the types. I have just became more in touch with my creative side during my time outside of the United States(not that the U.S. is a bad place, I love America, God, bless her tender heart, but it is a very fast paced country, I barely have time for myself.)

INFJs operate within themselves on an intuitive basis which is entirely spontaneous. They know things intuitively, without being able to pinpoint why, and without detailed knowledge of the subject at hand. The good thing is I am finally listening to those instincts, I hae gotten in lots of trouble for not following my instict and sometimes, I feel things and I can't understand them until after things happen. They are usually right, and they usually know it. Consequently, INFJs put a tremendous amount of faith into their instincts and intuitions. This is something of a conflict between the inner and outer worlds,...... and may result in the INFJ not being as organized as other Judging types tend to be. Or we may see some signs of disarray in an otherwise orderly tendency, such as a consistently messy desk... Lol, my desk might be messy for a minute, but as soon as I realize it I am putting it in order!

INFJs have uncanny insight into people and situations. They get "feelings" about things and intuitively understand them. As an extreme example, some INFJs report experiences of a psychic nature, such as getting strong feelings about there being a problem with a loved one, and discovering later that they were in a car accident. This actually brings tears to my eyes, I remember that night my aunt died, I kept telling my cousin Janet that, "I am having a funny feeling all I could describe it as was rest in peace tatoo's. She thought I was crazy and after some time started ignoring me. The next morning, We got bad news that my aunt died in a car accident, around the time I was holding the conversation with my cousin, the crazy part is that she was all the way in Nigeria, when she died. Another time, In my dream I saw another aunts spirit in my kitchen, I had not spoken with her in about 5 years or so...a day or two later my uncle came over and told me she died...

This is the sort of thing that other types may scorn and scoff at, and the INFJ themself does not really understand their intuition at a level which can be verbalized. Consequently, most INFJs are protective of their inner selves, sharing only what they choose to share when they choose to share it. They are deep, complex individuals, who are quite private and typically difficult to understand. INFJs hold back part of themselves, and can be secretive.

But the INFJ is as genuinely warm as they are complex. INFJs hold a special place in the heart of people who they are close to, who are able to see their special gifts and depth of caring. INFJs are concerned for people's feelings, and try to be gentle to avoid hurting anyone. Omg, I have a major problem with this, especially when a guy likes me, I am able to say, I am not interested but I can never tell the truth as to why because I am afraid of hurting their feelings. I am careful what I say to people because I don't wasnt them to be sad. Or loose their confidence.

They are very sensitive to conflict, and cannot tolerate it very well. I can't hold a grudge to save my life. Situations which are charged with conflict may drive the normally peaceful INFJ into a state of agitation or charged anger. They may tend to internalize conflict into their bodies, and experience health problems when under a lot of stress. I don't know about all that, once I am comfortable with certain people, I'll let them know! I am not the one!

Because the INFJ has such strong intuitive capabilities, they trust their own instincts above all else. This may result in an INFJ stubborness and tendency to ignore other people's opinions. They believe that they're right. On the other hand, INFJ is a perfectionist who doubts that they are living up to their full potential. INFJs are rarely at complete peace with themselves - there's always something else they should be doing to improve themselves and the world around them. They believe in constant growth, and don't often take time to revel in their accomplishments. They have strong value systems, and need to live their lives in accordance with what they feel is right. In deference to the Feeling aspect of their personalities, INFJs are in some ways gentle and easy going. Conversely, they have very high expectations of themselves, and frequently of their families. They don't believe in compromising their ideals.

INFJ is a natural nurturer; patient, devoted and protective. They make loving parents and usually have strong bonds with their offspring. They have high expectations of their children, and push them to be the best that they can be. This can sometimes manifest itself in the INFJ being hard-nosed and stubborn. But generally, children of an INFJ get devoted and sincere parental guidance, combined with deep caring.

In the workplace, the INFJ usually shows up in areas where they can be creative and somewhat independent. They have a natural affinity for art, and many excel in the sciences, where they make use of their intuition. INFJs can also be found in service-oriented professions. They are not good at dealing with minutia or very detailed tasks..... I lol, I don't believe in being to observant, I think in some ways over analysis takes place and people tend to loose their sensitivity and begin to hurt themselves by limiting themselves, based on being to judgmental and observant. Some times, things just happen! The INFJ will either avoid such things, or else go to the other extreme and become enveloped in the details to the extent that they can no longer see the big picture. An INFJ who has gone the route of becoming meticulous about details may be highly critical of other individuals who are not.

The INFJ individual is gifted in ways that other types are not. Life is not necessarily easy for the INFJ, but they are capable of great depth of feeling and personal achievment. AMEN to that!

Exercise 8
My ideal enviroment is clean and cool (in temperature), the sun is shinning filled with people and there is a little corner just for me. This environment is surrounded with water. Eveyone is doing there own thing. There are lots of food and sweets to go around. There are many museums and presidential libraries to see. There are different types of fishes. No birds, no cats, no dogs, no flies(including cock roaches) and they are definently no mice or rats. Everyone is happy, no one is suffering. There is a starbucks and my apple laptop definently accompanies me. All my siblings are right by my side to share the beauty. There are bright colors every where. No cars buses or trains. Everything is close by and everyone owns a horse. I however own a white and pink horse. There are no rules everyone just does what is right and care about the community as a whole.

Exercise 9:
My ideal day
It's 5:30am and I am up bright early filled with energy. I start my morning with a fresh cup of foldgers coffee, I would then check my email and listen to my voicemails, taking notes so I remember everything. I turn to the morning news while creating my daily agenda using my much broader weekly agenda. Next, I open the glass sliding door that leads to the beach in the back of my white house. I start by running along the lake front and then I follow it up with some yoga. I watch the sun rise then head back in my home and prepeare for my day at work, I own my own hospital or I work in Coorperate Law. While at the office, I take care of important business, and work hard to make sure my clients and or patients are satisfied. I socialize with my employees; and try to maintain a strigent boss employee relationship while being very cool with them. I spend fifteen minutes on a phone conference with my siblings and my mother. Then I buzz my father to see how he is doing. After a short day at the office I meet up with a few friends(men and women) for dinner, we discuss everything from marraige life and our children to current events. We spend the last few hour of the dinner discussing an ongoing project that we are forecasting in Africa and discuss our next trip to Africa; we discuss our goals are in helping the country become better developed, promoting scholarship and impacting the government. Then I head home in my two door (whatever year it is)BMW and I call my husband to confirm that his had dinner. When I get home I'll have some wine, with my hubby and discuss our day(if he isn't/wasn't a part of the dinner discussion) then end my day with a nice bubble bath in our medium sized jacuzzi.

(That was fun. I am laughing but I can see that being an ideal day for me.)

Exercise 9:
Fantasy Analysis

The elements in my ideal day analysis that are essential is the success, close relationship with my family and projects in helping Nigeria become a better place.
The elements that can be eliminated however are the BMW, the jaccuzi, living in a beach house.
The unessential elements are watching the sunrise from the lake front. I can have a area in my home office or bedroom(anywhere) that will allow me to enjoy that sun rise!
The indispencible element are the most vital things to my heart. If I have to leave everything else and just deal with the essentials, I would still be happy with myself.
The elements that already exist is the daily talk with 1 of my 4 younger siblings. At least once a week we have a phone conference with my mom and sometimes the other siblings and dad are present.
I currently do not have that(whatever year) BMW niether do I have a hubby nor am I a boss. (But I am "bosslady")
The walls that are currently between me and my ideal life is time, me completing my education and money.

Activities I love...
This weeks activity I joined the Nigerian Islamic Association Youth Ministry. I enjoy going to the Mosque and being involved with both my religion and people. We discussed issues and planed a movie night.

Interviews. Fall 09

Interviewing mom/ dad over the phone str8 from Naija... Recorded Telephone conversation:Me : I am doing an assignmeent for class and I need you to tell me what I was like before six years old? Can you do that?. Mommy: (Laughing) Okay. Mommy/Daddy:(Dad was in the background) You were a character! You were exremely entertaining! Although you were a kid, u had a fast and sharp response for everything. When the driver would bring you home from school and neighbors saw you they would say, "APATA" (Which was teh name of my school at the time; it is one of the best primary schools in Nigeria)your response would be "APATA, Iyanlaya e!"(Your mothers, mother is Apata... doesn't sound so good translated, but it is a verbal insult) Everyone knew you and some of them you didn't know; but they love you! Some people still ask about you. Any where you went you stood out! You liked dancing and listening to things... you would listen to the tele; but you never sat and watched it much. The only way we knew you were listening because you would repeat things from the tele like commercials, or a funny part of the showing. You were nice most of the time, but when people upset you, you were abusive(this does not mean physically violent, it means verbeally). Other than that you were friendly, you like to mingle with people and ask A LOT of questions, some times I would beg you to be quite because you asked people real personal questions and it was embarassing at times.(Laughed) With the other kids I would bribe them with food and candy to get them to listen, but you hated food we had to beg you to eat and you would fight and cry becuase you didn't want to eat. You were quite, but you were always listening to people's conversations, even when they thought you were not listening. You were very caring and helpful, sometimes I think you tried to protect other people before you thought about yourself, none of your siblings were like that, it was always ME ME ME! (Laughing) If someone said they wanted to do something; you would get up and go do it for them. They were usually shocked, because they could not believe you were listening to them.(Laughing) You like to dance and dress up, you were very (Oman shebi omo obirin gon.= prissy) and you got a lot of attention. You read a lot, you love to do math problems and you like studying. Your teachers usually made comments like she is a very smart girl, she learns quickly. Her attitude is dominating, and she can be very mean at times, when people upset her. This assignment was fun. It had me laughing so hard becuase a lot of what they said is still what I do and who I am today.

Interviewing my friends this year and reviewing my previous interview, I see that I am known for being determnined and helpful. :)
What I did this weekend that I have not done in a long while:
This weekend I hung out with my childhood friends  and discussed long excessive memories of each other.
So during last class activities I concluded that I like to engage in challenging activities. I and 3 other friends visited a gun range in Indiana; They all shot the guns, but me, I chickened out and was on the verge of bursting in tears.
